A California University of Pennsylvania student has sued the school, saying her online education after in-person classes were canceled this spring was not the quality education she paid for.
Ashleigh Coffman of Greensburg, who graduated in May with a degree in marketing, claims her online classes were an “insufficient alternative” and were “sub-par in practically every aspect” to classroom instruction, and that she should have received a pro-rated refund of her tuition. She contends that Cal U unjustly enriched itself by not offering the refund.
Coffman is seeking the refund plus legal fees, and she is asking for a federal court certification of the lawsuit as a class action on behalf of other Cal students. That could cost the university more than $5 million.
While no other State System school has been sued, it’s conceivable that others from the state-owned universities could seek to join in.
