Approaching a year since it was chartered, the State System Faculty Shared Governance Commission is ready to resume its work after being delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The work of the commission was put on hold in March in order to focus on helping students finish the spring semester.
The State System Board of Governors formed the Faculty Shared Governance Commission last summer to give the faculty union a role in setting policies for the State System as a whole, but not at the university level. In January, it issued a “Guiding Principles” document and identified the issues that it might address.
The new timeline calls for a draft recommendation in June, and spend June and July gathering feedback in small group meetings with stakeholders. Then in July, place the recommendations online and spend August and September gathering more feedback. Then final recommendations will be developed for the Board of Governors to consider at its October meetings.
IUP faculty member Francisco Alarcón is a member of the Shared Governance Commission.
