Lincoln Park tried to get around the PIAA’s new competitive balance rule on a technicality, but its appeal was denied yesterday by a 24-5 vote.
The charter school will be bumped up to Class 4A for boys’ basketball next season. Lincoln Park argued that the two “success points” assigned to it for making the state quarterfinals should not have applied because the rule says “participation,” but they could not participate after the basketball season was halted by the pandemic. Camp Hill High School tried the same tactic in its appeal and was also rejected.
The National Federation of State High School Associations earlier this week issued its guidelines for return-to-play for high school sports. The PIAA is a member of the organization and normally would follow whatever rules the NFSHSA sets, but the PIAA board decided yesterday that they would use the rules as a “resource” and continue to rely on the instructions of the governor and the Department of Health.
