IUP President Michael Driscoll announced some of the plans that will go into place for the fall 2020 semester.
In a video on IUP’s website, Driscoll said that a student survey showed that students want to get back on campus, and while he says that while face-to-face instruction is the ultimate goal, the University must be ready to switch to digital programs if needed.
One way that Driscoll suggested that classes could be held in safe conditions would be for half the class to attend in person, while the other half would attend virtually. Both groups would trade off to make sure that all students get the face-to-face instruction needed. He also suggested that for students in IUP’s dormitories, efforts are being made to give students private bedrooms and either private bathrooms or a bathroom where they would have to share with no more than two others, and all shared living and learning areas will be sanitized on a regular basis.
Driscoll said that there will also be a one-stop resource center set up to help students not just with their academic lives, but with their lives outside the classroom as well.
Also being put into place are readjusted schedules for faculty and staff to keep them safe and also have them be more readily available when students need help, and dining facilities and common areas will be upgraded to follow social distancing guidelines with signs similar to what is seen in grocery stores now.
Driscoll added that the university will be flexible as they know that guidelines could change very quickly as new information on Covid-19 comes out.
