Indiana County District Attorney Bob Manzi yesterday filed the information in the Matthew Bartlebaugh homicide case and today Bartlebaugh is scheduled for formal arraignment.
The 26-year-old is charged with shooting to death his father, 43-year-old Jerald Bartlebaugh, as Jerald slept in his bed early on New Year’s morning in his home in Glen Campbell. Jerald’s girlfriend was also in the bed but was unharmed.
Matthew Bartlebaugh held police at bay after the shooting, threatening to shoot any officer who approached the house at the corner of Graham and Morris streets. He surrendered after flashbang grenades were tossed into the home, and later confessed to the shooting. He was ordered to stand trial at a preliminary hearing May 1st before District Judge Guy Haberl.
Police said at the time of his arrest that Matthew Bartlebaugh has suffered for years from mental illness. He is represented by attorneys Taylor Malcolm Johnson and Geoffrey Kugler of the county’s public defender’s office.
