The State Game Commission says a fatally injured osprey found last Tuesday in a field in Blacklick Township had been shot. Officer Chris Reidmiller said yesterday that the bird’s necropsy report confirmed his suspicions and said they are hoping the public can help “track down the shooter”.
The severely injured bird was found in a farmer’s field north of Blairsville. It was taken to a rescue facility in Youngwood, where a veterinarian had to euthanize it on Wednesday. Reidmiller said a nearby resident saw the bird flying in the area Monday evening and it was later seen hobbling in the field.
The area in which it was found would not be typical for an osprey, which prefers bodies of water where it can feed on fish. The Game Commission said last week that it is migration season and the osprey may have been flying north, which is why it would be about four miles from the Conemaugh River.
Anyone with information that might help the investigation is urged to call the Game Commission at 724-238-9523.
