There’s a statewide effort to feed people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and it’s coming to Indiana County today.
Operation BBQ Relief, a food distribution organization that formed after the tornado in Joplin, Missouri in 2011 and now operates nationwide, has joined with the Salvation Army to provide 720,000 freshly-prepared pre-packed meals to Pennsylvanians in need. It’s a four-week contract facilitated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Emergency Feeding Task Force using barbecue restaurants and food distributors to hand out 180,000 meals each week.
This afternoon beginning at two o’clock, the Indiana Salvation Army will be distributing meals in the lower lot of the KCAC. They will give one box of meals per vehicle and the Army will be there until they are out of boxes. Salvation Army workers across the state will wear masks, gloves and practice social distancing while distributing the boxes of food.
Inside the boxes will be dinner trays with a frozen, freshly prepared meat, vegetable, and a starch; lunch trays of pre-packaged and frozen foods; and breakfasts with foods such as muffins, instant oatmeal, fruit cups, cereal, and dry milk.
The State Department of Human Services is covering the cost for all food, twelve refrigerator/freezer trucks, gas for the trucks and fuel for the generators to keep the trucks cold.
