Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate went up in the month of March, but it does not yet reflect the unemployment situation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
The state Department of Labor and Industry reported that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate went up 1.3 percentage points to 6 percent. They also said the statistics for the month of March reflect the week of March 8-14, which was before many of the necessary Coronavirus related business and school closures took place. The full impact of the closures will be seen in April’s statistics.
For March, the state’s civilian labor force went down by 19,000 over the month of February. Resident employment was down 104,000 while unemployment rose by 85,000. The state-wide total of non-farm jobs was down by 40,400 over the record high month of February to 6,069,200 in March. Jobs were down in 10 of the 11 industry super sectors, with the largest decline seen in leisure and hospitality.
