The Homer-Center School Board met last night for a combined voting and planning session.
During the voting portion of the meeting, the board voted down a motion to approve a declaration of disaster emergency. The reason why was because the district’s solicitor did not recommend the action because the declaration applies to government bodies, like state, county and municipal governments, and not school districts. The board did approve changes to the district calendar, retroactively approving the start of homebound enrichment on March 30th for students. Other changes included adding april 9th, 13th and 14th, May 8th , and June 2nd to 5th as instructional days for students. The last day of the year will now be June 5th, with June 6th is set as a tentative date for graduation, and the final teacher day being June 8th.
Duirng the planning meeting, the continuity of education plan was discussed and board members had concerns about the enrichment program that was in place. High School Principal Jody Rainey said that while enrichment does mean going over material again, new material is being taught.
The district will continue with enrichment efforts for now as the administration will take a look at how many students are able to receive online learning. A decision on whether the online education will continue as enrichment or switch to a graded system will be made at the next regular meeting.
