As the number of coronavirus cases continues to increase across the state, so does the number of unemployment claims in Pennsylvania.
The state has received unemployment compensation applications from nearly 650,000 state residents since March 15th and Governor Tom Wolf said yesterday that he expects that by the end of the day today, that number will reach 800,000 new applications. That represents about 10 percent of all the new claims in the country. Gov. Wolf says the state Department of Labor and Industry is working hard to process the surge in unemployment claims as quickly as possible.
On March 15th, over 90,000 people filed claims for unemployment in Pennsylvania. That’s the single highest day for unemployment claims during the coronavirus outbreak, and it was also the day after Governor Wolf made the initial order for non-life sustaining businesses to shut down in an effort to stop the spread of the virus.
