After the federal government extended the tax filing deadline for ninety days, Pennsylvania on Saturday followed suit, also extending the deadline to July 15th.
Earlier last week, the IRS announced that payment of 2019 federal taxes would be postponed, by kept intact the April 15th filing deadline. Now, both filing and payments will be due on July 15th, for both federal and state taxes.
Importantly, the state has also announced that the extensions apply not only to the final 2019 tax returns, but also to the estimated payments for the first and second quarters of 2020, for those who are subject to those taxes. The Department of Revenue is also waiving penalties and interest on payments through July 15th.
Even though the deadline is extended, you are still encouraged to file your taxes electronically as soon as possible. With state offices closed, mailed returns may not be processed for a while, but electronic filings can be processed quicker. Plus, those expecting a refund will get their money sooner.
