Six more brush fires struck the area yesterday, including a major one in northern Indiana County that started in a garage and spread to the nearby woods. Banks Township was particularly hard hit.
The action started at 12:42 PM when the Blairsville fire company was dispatched to a brush fire along Gray Station Road in Derry Township, Westmoreland County.
About fifteen minutes later, Creekside and Indiana were sent to a brush fire along Lingenfelter Road in Rayne Township, and minutes later, Plumville, Marion Center, and Dayton were summoned for a fire along Harmon Road in Washington Township.
Shortly before 2 PM, Indiana firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire along Route 286 East in White Township.
Then at 2:49 PM, Glen Campbell firefighters were called to Hemlock Lane Road in Banks Township, where a garage had caught fire. The Commodore and Rossiter fire companies, along with the Central and Big Run fire departments out of Jefferson County were called minutes later as the fire spread to the woods. The owner had found the garage fully involved when he walked in. He was able to save one vehicle but lost several motorcycles.
At 4:02 PM, the Rossiter, Perry Township, and Big Run fire companies were dispatched to an unattended fire along Hillman Road in Banks Township. At 5:14, Commodore and Big Run were sent to a brush fire along Lockvale Road in Banks Township. And shortly after 8:30, Glen Campbell, Rossiter, and Big Run were back at the scene of the garage fire in Banks Township for a rekindle.
The six brush fires yesterday brought the season total to 19.
