Pittsburgh is coming off a 3-1 win over Montreal on Friday night, a win which featured two goals by newcomer Jason Zucker.
Today’s game is the final time that these two teams will meet in the regular season. Pittsburgh won both meetings in Detroit, 5-3 on December 7, and then 2-1 in overtime on January 17 (2-1) in the final game of the Dads’ Trip. The Pens have wins in four of their last five contests against Detroit. At home, the Penguins have won three-straight games, and five of their last six versus the Red Wings dating back to Feb. 18, 2016.
As the NHL celebrates “Hockey Day in America,” the Penguins have had 16 American-born players skate for them this season, the most in the NHL. The special game-day event is a celebration of all levels of Pittsburgh amateur hockey, including sled hockey, special needs hockey, blind hockey and the Pittsburgh Warriors Disabled Veterans Hockey Team.
