Senator Bob Casey is co-chairing a U.S. Senate committee that is focusing on protecting senior citizens from social security scams.
The Senate Aging Committee met for a hearing earlier this week, and it brought to light a new report that shows that social security scams are now the most popular scams perpetrated by phone impersonators. Senator Casey said that the issue, along with other important issues cannot be set aside, even though the impeachment trial is going on.
Casey said that the fastest-growing scam involves someone impersonating a social security official who calls claiming there is a problem with an individual’s social security number and threatens legal action.
Experts say education is the key to helping curtail phone scams that target the elderly, with one testifying that this type of scam cost her 150 thousand dollars
Casey introduced the Stop Senior Scams act, which will provide resources to retailers and financial institutions to help them fight financial fraud.
