An IUP professor was named the recipient of a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the continuing development of measurement tools and educational models for course-based research experiences in the classroom.
The grant will go to Dr. David I. Hanauer, an English professor at IUP. The money, which will be distributed over the next five years, will go towards developing assessments that can help predict persistence of students. The main goal will be to develop and refine courses that will keep students involved in scientific study and research. The grant will also support Hanauer’s continuing research into educational variables and pedagogical models that facilitate student persistence in inquiry-based STEM courses.
Hanauer has been with IUP since 2003 and over the last 17 years, his research was supported by the National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Federal Department of Education.
