Last week at this time, the weather was spring-like and temperatures were up in the 50’s. This week, winter weather returned to the area, and weather experts are expecting some sour conditions over the weekend.
The National Weather Service put a Winter Weather Advisory into effect this morning for Indiana County and the surrounding area, and that advisory will remain in effect until 7:00 tonight. They are predicting that the area will see snow to start the day and it’s expected to change into a mix of freezing rain and sleet this afternoon, and later changing to rain.
The PA Department of Health is asking people to be careful when it comes to winter weather. In a news release, Secretary of Health Dr. Rachael Levine said that precautions should be taken when dealing with winter weather, whether you are playing in the snow or shoveling out. When it comes to dressing for the outdoors, clothing should include several layers, a waterproof insulated jacket and pants, a hat that covers the ears, gloves and a scarf to protect the face.
Levine also advises everyone to be careful if you have to walk on an icy surface. If you have to walk on ice, take slow deliberate steps, wear shoes with a grip, and be aware of potential black ice.
