There has been another big leap in the number of flu cases across Pennsylvania in the last week, and Indiana County is, unfortunately, following the trend.
The Department of Health’s weekly flu count says there were 6,209 new confirmed cases across the commonwealth in the week ending December 28th. The new total for the entire season dating back to the week ending October 5th is 17,349 laboratory-confirmed flu cases. Two more people died from the flu last week, bring the season total to nine. The state does not disclose where the deaths occurred.
There were 52 new flu cases confirmed in Indiana County last week. That’s after an increase of 41 cases the week before. So far this season, Indiana County has had 111 cases of laboratory-confirmed flu since October. Type B flu continues to be the most troublesome…last week’s report put the total of Type B cases at 50…now it’s 96. The number of Type A cases rose from nine to fifteen.
Among our neighbors, Armstrong County’s flu cases rose by 49 in the last week, to 123. Cambria County had 207 more cases, bringing its total to 682. Clearfield jumped from 35 cases to 102. Jefferson County flu cases rose from 23 to 76. Westmoreland County’s total rose from 692 to 1,099.
