Dr. Brenda L. Carter, 78, of Indiana, formerly of Ford City, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, in Indiana.
A daughter of Marvin Edwin and Geraldine Byrd Carter, she was born Sept. 26, 1941.
Dr. Carter attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, continuing her doctorate at University of Pittsburgh in Communication Arts.
She joined the Indiana University of Pennsylvania community in May 1990 as Associate Dean. Before coming to IUP, she served as a professor and chair of the Division of Social Sciences at Carlow University. Following a two-year stint as Associate Dean, she was appointed Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She taught “JFK, the assassination and conspiracy” as a cap course while she was Dean at IUP. Dr. Carter retired from IUP in 2003.
She enjoyed hiking, playing tennis and research focused on linguistics and history.
She is survived by her partner, Dr. Sharon Montgomery; her sister, Marvelle Lightfields; her dog, Mike (MichaelAngelo); and close family, the Dadson’s: Ben, Lori, Nadia, Helena and Lexus. She will be deeply missed by them.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held in the near future. Robinson-Lytle, Inc., is in charge of arrangements.
