Starting on Monday, drivers on Philadelphia Street will see one of the stoplights start flashing yellow. This is ahead of that stoplight’s eventual removal in the spring.
PennDOT announced that at 10:00 AM on the 9th, the traffic signal at 11th and Philadelphia Street will begin operating on flash mode, flashing yellow for Philadelphia street and Red for 11th. Stop signs will also go into place on the 11th Street Approaches. PennDOT said in a news release that they will study and monitor the intersection before the signal’s removal in the spring.
PennDOT is taking the signal down during the Philadelphia Street for the upcoming bridge replacement project. During their design phase, PennDOT studied traffic volume at the bridge site on multiple occasions and say that the traffic signal does not meet state requirements of the State Code for the installation of a traffic control signal.
Indiana Borough Council has been against the idea of removing the traffic signal. Council President Peter Broad says that they are considering the safety of not just the drivers, but pedestrians as well.
He says that Indiana Borough Police will independently monitor traffic in the area, and if anyone has problems, they should contact the police department.
