One of the traditions of the long Thanksgiving weekend is the start of rifle deer season on Monday, but that changes this year as deer season will begin two days earlier.
This year marks the first year since 1963 that the first day of rifle deer season will not be on a Monday, but it instead will start on Saturday, November 30th. The issue of moving the first day of deer season to the Saturday after Thanksgiving has divided hunters. Those in favor of the move hope it brings more hunters to the woods on a day when many people may not need to be at work, while those against the move say it will interfere with hunting camp traditions and affect long-standing Thanksgiving plans.
In a statement, Game Commission Warden Dan Murray said that the reason for the change is to create additional opportunities to recruit new hunters and retain the ones they already have.
