The Pirates hired Derek Shelton, the former Twins bench coach, on Wednesday to succeed Clint Hurdle, installing a first-time manager in the dugout under Pirates president Travis Williams and GM Ben Cherington.
Shelton, 49, had been the Twins’ bench coach for the past two years. He managed in the Yankees system for three years.
