The Indiana School Board last night approved a new program that would be used as an one-time alternative to citations and suspensions for students caught using tobacco or vaping devices.
The program, called “Smokeless Saturdays” is meant to be a “restorative disciplinary practice” for junior and senior high students. The student would be given the option of attending a Smokeless Saturday class at either IRMC or another location from a list of places that hold these classes at a cost of $50, which would be covered by the student. Senior High Assistant principal Doug Johnson said the program is more than just talking about why smoking and vaping are bad.
In other business, the board approved the installation of seven 911 panic alarms in the office of each school and one for the district office at East Pike. The cost will be $240 for each office installation and $35 a month for the monitoring service.
The board also recognized Doug Steve and John Barbor for their years of service as last night’s meeting was the final one of their terms. Steve had served on the Indiana School Board for eight years, while Barbour was on the board for six years.
