State police are reminding everyone that it is important for drivers to yield to oncoming emergency vehicles that are on their way to a call.
Troopers say in a news release that motorists should remember to yield the road to emergency vehicles that are on their way to the scene of an emergency by pulling over to the right edge of the road or to the curb when they see an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing or siren going off, and come to a stop until the emergency vehicle has passed, unless otherwise directed by a police officer or other official.
While those responding to an emergency can’t perform a traffic stop to cite someone for not following this part of the vehicle code, the patrol unit’s audio and video recorder will likely pick up the violation. In these situations, police can conduct a follow-up investigation to identify the driver and issue a citation. On top of the court costs, violators could also pay a $25 fine.
