The State House yesterday unanimously passed Representative Jim Struzzi’s bill that establishes tuition assistance for active members of volunteer fire companies or emergency medical services agencies who attend an approved institution of higher education.
In a recent appearance on Indiana In the Morning on WCCS, Struzzi said the number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania has decreased “in a frightening manner”, and his bill would address a critical need by offering an incentive to young people to sign on.
The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee conducted a hearing on the bill in Indiana last month. The bill is part of the Republican Caucus’ “Helpers and Heroes” initiative. Struzzi’s House Bill 1773 now advances for consideration in the State Senate.
