The State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors will vote today on a motion to ask the state for $487 million in next year’s state budget. That’s a two percent increase from this year. But the board also will vote on asking for an extra $100 million to $300 million over five years to help bring about the State System Redesign.
The board debated the amount of the extra money yesterday. The original proposal was to request $100 million, which board member State Representative Brad Roae thought was reasonable, but Chairwoman Cynthia Shapira proposed asking for $300 million, saying $100 million was not enough.
As yesterday’s meeting adjourned, board members hadn’t decided on an amount. Most supported the $300 million request, but Roae said he doubted his colleagues would be interested in that much extra money.
The discussion will continue when the board reconvenes in a voting meeting this morning.
