At the Ligonier Valley school board meeting Monday night, the board voted unanimously to enter the WPIAL in all sports beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, which means leaving the Heritage Conference after this school year.
After the meeting, school board president Ivan Tantlinger resigned as president after spending 17 years on the board. Tantlinger said the move allows the students to play for more championships. Before the move is approved, Ligonier Valley must get approval from District 6 and the Heritage Conference to leave and also get approval from the WPIAL to join.
Jody Rainey, the president of the Heritage Conference, commented on the news:
“(It) is one step of several that needed to take place before it is actually official. I’ve had some conversations with LV and knew this was going to be considered. I do expect to have a conversation with their principal tomorrow at some point to discuss exactly their plan and next steps.”
Ligonier Valley has been a member of the Heritage Conference since its inception in 2000. Ligonier Valley spent 43 years in the WPIAL from 1927 to 1969.
