The State System of Higher Education yesterday released the fall enrollment figures for all fourteen of its schools, and it shows IUP had the steepest decline of them all.
Overall, enrollment dropped across the System by 2.6 percent, the ninth consecutive year it has declined. Ten of the fourteen schools saw decreases, while four increased enrollment.
Once the largest of the State System schools, IUP remains the second-largest, but now trails West Chester by more than 7,000 students. West Chester added 139 students compared to last year’s fall enrollment, while IUP fell by 945. IUP’s 8.16 percent decrease was more than twice as much as the school that saw the second-highest decline, California.
West Chester, Mansfield, Millersville, and Cheyney were the four schools with increased enrollment. Cheyney’s enrollment increased by 149 students, almost 32 percent more than last year.
There are 95,802 students enrolled at State System schools, roughly the same as it was twenty years ago.
State System Chancellor Dan Greenstein is in the midst of his fall tour of the fourteen universities. He was in Clarion yesterday, and is at Edinboro today. He is scheduled to visit IUP on October 25th.
