In the wake of another IUP Homecoming weekend, the various agencies that comprise I-ACT, the Indiana Area Collaborative Team, report “no significant incidents” from the large crowds that gathered in Indiana.
The police activity reports from 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon to 7 o’clock yesterday morning show IUP police making seven arrests for public drunkenness or underage drinking, two for drugs, and fifteen traffic stops with one citation and one arrest. Indiana Borough Police said they had a busy, but calmer Saturday night, with 107 calls, up from 66 last year. But the twenty arrests were only one more than in 2018. State police made seven DUI arrests (two of them drug-related), three public drunkenness arrests and one underage drinking arrest. They also collared one suspect for drug possession, one for possession of drug paraphernalia, and one for having a prohibited offensive weapon.
State police also were involved in a vehicle pursuit of a 15-year-old Shelocta girl. It started on Warren Road and ended about seven miles later when she pulled over. She was under the influence of alcohol.
In all, for the weekend state police made 327 traffic stops and issued 232 citations. There were three crash investigations, and ten arrests for drug and drug paraphernalia.
State police are investigating a drug bust in New Stanton, Westmoreland County, and they say the drugs were on their way to Indiana County.
It happened at 9 AM on Friday when the Troop A Community Enforcement Team, operating in support of the IUP Homecoming Detail, discovered a 25-year-old Pittsburgh man with a suitcase full of drugs, including about four pounds of marijuana and thirty-five containers of THC edibles. Police estimate the street value of the drugs at $14,000.
Trooper Clifford Greenfield says it’s not clear whether or not the drugs are connected to Indiana or to IUP Homecoming. The suspect has not been publicly identified and charges have not yet been filed.
