From IUP Sports Information
WACO, Tex. – After a week of mostly chalk from the top teams in the nation, IUP football remained at No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, released Monday.
Among this week’s top 25 is just one new team as 16 teams remained in the same spot from last week’s rankings.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 54-0 victory at Millersville Saturday. IUP piled up 560 total yards and limited Millersville to just 26, the second lowest total allowed defensively in program history.
IUP senior quarterback Quinton Maxwell was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week after scoring four touchdowns in just one half of play.
Maxwell and IUP women’s field hockey goalie Lexi Ciano, a sophomore, were named IUP Athletes of the Week, announced by the sports information office Monday afternoon. Ciano posted two shutouts for the IUP field hockey program as the Crimson Hawks won a pair of games to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2011.
The top five football teams in the top 25 remained the same with just two of those teams shuffling positions. Valdosta State (2-0) received 31 of the 32 first place votes to stay at No. 1 with Ferris State (2-0) picking up the other first place vote to come in at No. 2. Minnesota State (2-0), Tarleton State (2-0) and Notre Dame (Ohio) (2-0) round out the top five.
Other PSAC schools in the top 25 include Slippery Rock (2-0) at No. 11 and West Chester (2-0) at No. 18.
The Crimson Hawks return home to Miller Stadium to host Lock Haven (1-1) Saturday at 4 p.m. It is the annual Hall of Fame Game and there will be a free concert performed by rising country music superstar Tucker Beathard prior to kickoff.
