Pitt Coach Pat Narduzzi inexplicably elected to try for a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, trailing by a touchdown with under five minutes to play yesterday. The kick bounced off the upright and the Panthers lost to Penn State, 17-10.
Narduzzi explained his decision at his news conference after the game: “I wanted to play to win the football game. It’s a two-possession game, as far as we’ve got to score twice to win the football game.”
Pitt’s rushing attack gained only 24 yards on 25 carries and quarterback Kenny Pickett threw 51 passes, completing 35 for 372 yards.
Penn State scored touchdown on two long drives, including a 97-yard drive highlighted by Journey Brown’s 85 yards run, and an 8-yard drive in the third quarter, capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by Noah Cain that proved the game-winner.
The Nittany Lions are 3-0. Pitt falls to 1-2.
