It was a second straight embarrassing performance by the Pirates yesterday, as the Chicago Cubs destroyed the Bucs, 14-1. A day after surrendering 17 runs to the Cubs, Bucco pitchers were far below standard again, with starter James Marvel giving up seven runs in four innings, Wei-Chung Wang surrendered three in two-thirds of an inning, Clay Holmes let in three more in an inning-and-a-third, and Parker Markel gave up a run in his single inning. Yefrey Ramirez managed to escape unscathed in his inning of relief. If you are saying, “I never heard of any of those guys,” you are not alone. But yes, they are Pirates.
Kevin Newman had three hits and Adam Frazier and Jose Osuna each had two.
Trevor Williams will give it a go for the Pirates this afternoon in the series finale at Wrigley Field.
