After another racist post on social media hit the IUP community last week, the university has scheduled an event tonight entitled, “A Community Response to Hate at IUP”.
The post last week was by a white male student who was being videoed by another person making racist comments. A joint statement by IUP Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Elise Glenn and Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Segar says, “This has been said before but it bears repeating because it is central to the foundation of IUP: Hate has no place in our community, and we do not condone incidents of discrimination or racist messages.”
Other social media posts responding to the incident show that a growing number of minority students are upset that the student wasn’t immediately expelled. IUP says it is “taking appropriate action” with the student and is seeking “constructive voices working together to make IUP a place where we actively continue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
The discussion tonight is scheduled for 6 PM in the Elkin Hall Great Room. For those who can’t be there, comments and ideas may be posted to social-equity@iup.edu.
