Last night, the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival kicked off in Downtown Indiana with music and vendors set up in the 500 block of Philadelphia Street, and the festival continues today.
The 500 block of Philadelphia Street will remain blocked today as the festival continues, with several different activities going on. Some of the activities of note for today include several workshops on topics like the Hoodlebug trail, growing garlic, and other topics, with all the workshops held at the Spaghetti Benders. Also, the third annual Storytellers and Liars contest will be held at 2:00 PM at The Coney, with cash prizes for first, second and third place. There will also be a Children’s Alley near the Fire Department from Noon to 5 with several kids activities.
At noon today will be the Northern Applachian Folk Festival Walk of fame ceremony honoring people in the Appalachia Region. Their names will be installed in bricks in front of Spaghetti Benders. This year, the honorees include Nelly Bly for education, John Brophy for Human Rights, The Grant Township Hellbenders for their environmental work, Jim Rodgers for the Arts and the IUP Women’s Basketball Team for Sports.
Of course the highlight throughout the day will be the music performed by several area groups. The music starts with The Evergreens at 1:15, the Abafasi Wimmis African Drummers at 2:30, Mike Stout at 3:45, Grist of the Mill at 5:00, Jim Donovan and the Sun King Warriors at 6:15, Jukehouse Bombers at 7:30 and closing out the show as the headliners will be the band that got its start at IUP, The Clarks at 8:45.
