On Thursday, State Representative Jim Struzzi filed two pieces of legislation that would regulate the production and sale of kratom and CBD products in the state.
Struzzi said in a news release announcing the filing that House Bill 459 would encourage the US Food and Drug Administration to provide guidelines to the state regarding CBD and the many products that contain CBD. Struzzi said that because of a lack of oversight on the federal level, there are no quality standards for CBD products and he says that there is little consistency in the market.
Meanwhile, House Bill 460 would also ask the FDA to provide guidelines for the over-the-counter sale of kratom. Kratom is used to help overcome opioid addictions but it has come under scrutiny from the FDA and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. After some significant opposition from the public, actions to ban the substance were withdrawn.
