The Pittsburgh Pirates had their opportunities to take the rubber match win in extra innings against the in-state rival Philadelphia Phillies, but the end result was a 2-1 loss at PNC Park on Sunday afternoon.
Starling Marte and Colin Moran were both hit by pitches and pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson was intentionally walked to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. But Elias Diaz hit two-out line drive that was caught by left fielder NIck Williams to send the game to extra innings.
Adam Frazier led off the Pirates’ half of the 10th inning with a double and Kevin Newman successfully bunted him to third, but Bryan Reynolds struck out for the fourth time in the game with one out and Marte grounded out to third to end that opportunity.
Here’s Joe Block with a recap of the earlier scoring and how the Phillies won.
