The next two days are expected to be two of the hottest days this year, and the PUC and the Health Department are offering up some advice to make sure that you keep your cool.
The Public Utility Commission is advising that use of heat producing appliances like dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers until after 7:00 PM. Also any non-essential appliances and non-essential lights should be off to help keep temperatures down inside your home. They also advise using ceiling fans to keep circulating air and close curtains or blinds to block out the sun. If you use a window air conditioning unit, close off rooms that are not in use, and to make sure that the filters are in good working order.
The state health department is also reminding people to take some precautions when it comes to keeping cool. This includes drinking plenty of water, and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol or a lot of sugar as they can cause dehydration. If you have to be outdoors, dress in light colors or white if possible, and take breaks in shady areas. Wear a wide brim hat, sunglasses and don’t forget the sunscreen.
Also check in on those who might be adversely affected by the heat like elderly neighbors. Also, and this is very key with legislation that was signed into effect for kids this year and for pets last year. DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN A HOT CAR! Not only could it harm them or kill them, you could face hefty penalties.
