A law that Governor Tom Wolf signed into law earlier this year goes into effect today to help those who try to rescue a child locked in a car.
The bill, signed into law by Governor Wolf on May 16th, will protect Good Samaritans from liability for damages if they believe that a child is in imminent danger, provided that every effort was made to try to get in contact with the vehicle owner and emergency responders, and that no more force than necessary be used in trying to help the child. Triple A East Central is saying that the new law, along with a similar law for pets that was signed into effect last year, will go a long way to help start a decline in the numbers of deaths due to people and pets being locked in hot cars.
Car makers are adding safety features to make things easier, but they remind parents to check the backseat before they leave the car, and keep vehicles locked at all times, including when parked in the garage. The Natonal Saftey Council said 51 children died last year of pediatric vehicular heatstroke.
