After taking two out of three games in Miami, the Pirates returned home last night and returned to their losing ways, falling to Detroit, 5-4.
Josh Bell hit his 20th home run of the season in the 2nd inning and Jung Ho Kang and Kevin Newman each had run-scoring triples, but the Pirates committed back-to-back errors in the 4th inning to fall behind, 4-1. The winning run for the Tigers scored in the 8th inning, as Pirates second baseman Adam Frazier hesitated before trying to tag out a runner and throw to first for a double play.
Rookie Mitch Keller gave up four runs on four hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision. Kyle Crick took the loss.
Here’s Joe Block with more.
The Pirates have lost 9-of-11 and fell further into the NL Central basement, as the Reds beat the Astros last night. The Pirates are a game-and-a-half behind Cincinnati.
Trevor Williams will return from the injured list and make his first start since May 16th tonight as the two-game series with Detroit wraps up. The Tigers will go with righty Jordan Zimmerman, who hasn’t pitched since April 25th.
