The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman Olli Maatta to Chicago for forward Dominik Kahun, who scored 13 goals and had 24 assists and was a plus-10 last year in his first NHL season.
While the trade costs the Penguins one of their top defenders, it also helps them handle a crippling salary cap issue. Maatta would have cost them $4 million against the cap this season. Kahun will make $925,000 this year on the last year of his entry-level contract. The Penguins also got a fifth round draft choice in the trade.
The oft-injured Maatta missed six weeks of the regular season last year with a shoulder injury. He scored one goal with 13 assists in 60 games and was a plus-9 last season. In 362 career games, he is a plus-61.
