PennDOT has released traffic fatality statistics for 2018, showing an increase from 2017’s record low 1,137 to 1,190. Ten of those fatalities occurred in Indiana County.
While the number of statewide traffic deaths increased by 53, last year’s death toll was still the third lowest on record, with decreases in motorcycle, heavy truck, and single vehicle run-off-the-road fatal crashes.
However, there was an increase from 246 to 355 fatal crashes involving drug or alcohol impaired drivers, an increase of 64 deaths involving drivers aged 65 to 74, and pedestrian fatalities increased by 51, from 150 to 201.
PennDOT notes that of Indiana County’s ten fatal crashes, three involved impaired drivers.
