Elder R.C. Green, 83, of Indiana, peacefully passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 23, 1936, in Homer City, a son of the late Ralph and Loella Smith Greene.
“Eld” brought people together. He was an outstanding “connector.” You could depend on Eld to get things done. He was generous with his time and knowledge and will be missed terribly by all who knew him.
Every year since 2000, he founded and held an Army reunion someplace in the USA. He organized Indiana High School reunions for his 1954 classmates. Elder honorably served in the U.S. Army for 21 years, with tours of duty across the USA, Germany, Japan, Turkey and Vietnam. He served as president of his local for the United Mine Workers and spent 15 years as a miner mechanic.
Elder, an avid race car fan, traveled with family and friends to Formula-1 at Monaco to local dirt tracks, NASCAR and Indy car races across the USA. “Al” loved all sports, but his passion was baseball. Athletic with a strong arm, he played baseball in high school and the Army and coached both sons in Little League.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, researching genealogy and sharing stories about our family history. His research led him to write a draft for a novel about interesting historical events.
He is survived by his wife Patricia “Patty” Sabolovich Green; two sons: Randy Green and wife Jacklyn (Letendre) Green, of Tucson, Ariz.; and Jeffrey Green, of Johnstown; two grandsons: Parker Green, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Tyler Green, of Tucson, Ariz. Other surviving family members are his sister, Kathy (Greene) Bennett and husband Harry, of Bellbrook, Ohio; his brother, Ralph Greene, Jr. and wife Carol (Ryan), of Indiana; his sister-in-law, Phyllis (Brentlinger) Greene, of Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Elder was preceded in death by his brother, John Greene.
Friends and family will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Robinson-Lytle, Inc., where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with Fr. William Lechnar officiating.
