It is election day in Indiana County and across the commonwealth, with Primary Election races for the county’s 38 municipalities, and for county offices, school boards, and state judicial races. There is also a Special Election to fill the remainder of retired State Senator Don White’s term, which expires at the end of next year.
In the Special Election, the candidates are Republican Joe Pittman, White’s chief of staff, and Democrat Susan Boser, an IUP professor. The candidates were chosen by their respective parties.
In the Primary Election, there are a number of contested races, including for county commissioner. Two Democrats and two Republicans will be chosen for the November General Election. Only two Democrats are on today’s ballot, Sherene Hess and Donald Lancaster. Five Republicans are vying for the two open slots: listed alphabetically, they are Bob Colgan, Robin Gorman, Maria Jack, Mike Keith, and Dan Wilson.
There’s a contested race is for county sheriff, where Bob Fyock is facing a challenge from Brad Overdorff on the Republican ballot, with Lou Sacco the only candidate listed for the Democrats.
All three candidates have cross-filed for the one magisterial district judge race, based in Blairsville. Incumbent Jennifer Rega is being challenged by Bob Bell and Angel Ashbaugh.
For District Attorney, Democrat Pat Dougherty and Republican Bob Manzi are the only candidates for their parties, so that race will be decided in November.
There are several contested school board races, including Indiana Area, Homer Center, and Blairsville-Saltsburg. The Center Township supervisors race has been active in the campaign season, as has the race for county auditor.
There are two polling place changes in the county. Voters in West Mahoning Township will cast their ballots at the Country Junction Restaurant, near the former township election house. Voting in Cherryhill Township Precinct Two has been moved to the Twolick Valley Social Center.
