PennDOT says Route 403 (the Cramer Pike) in East Wheatfield Township will be closed at least until tomorrow afternoon because of a sinkhole that opened up overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
The agency hasn’t said what caused the sinkhole nor how extensive the subterranean damage is beneath the heavily-traveled highway. The road is closed between the Route 711 (Charles Road) intersection and the Route 22 East ramp. Cramer Pike serves as one of two major routes to Johnstown from Indiana County. The easiest detour is to take Route 56 from Armagh, continuing through Seward and on to Johnstown on Haws Pike.
PennDOT had originally estimated a noon opening yesterday. It now says Route 403 could open again at about 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon.
