Former IUP football coach George Chaump has passed away at age 83.
Chaump (pictured on the left with former IUP quarterback Rich Ingold) was hired by new Athletic Director, Frank Cignetti, in 1982. Chaump’s overall record was 24-16-1 at IUP in four years from 1982 to 1985. His 1984 and 1985 teams won 15 games, losing only five and tying one.
His coaching career spanned six decades from high school to the NFL. He was 25 years old when he took over at John Harris High School in Harrisburg, where he would lead them to six straight leagues titles and a combined record of 58-4. In 1968, he joined Woody Hayes as an assistant at Ohio State. Following 11 seasons there, he landed in the NFL with John McKay at Tampa Bay. He then returned to the college ranks at IUP, Marshall University and the Naval Academy. He returned to the high school ranks at Central Dauphin and CD East.
In 23 seasons on the high school level, he compiled a mark of 190-66.
