According to a news release, pulmonologist and critical care specialist Dr. Robbit Mehta successfully completed IRMC’s first ever endobronchial ultrasound case. The procedure is a relatively new and a highly effective outpatient procedure that uses ultrasound and bronchoscopy to show the airway wall and the structures adjacent to it, allowing for real-time tissue collection, and that tissue can then be studied to help diagnose lung cancer and show how far along it is. It can also be used to evaluate pulmonary nodules, detect lung infections, and identify other diseases that can affect the lungs or cause enlarged lymph nodes or masses in the chest.
The new method requires no incisions and the patients, like the 63-year-old patient who underwent this exam, was discharged to home the same day. The patient was successfully diagnosed with early stage Lymphoma and is following up with recovery efforts.
