One school in Indiana County will join 150 other schools across the state in receiving some state grant money to help expand their breakfast program.
The program to help out school breakfast programs is now in its second year of operation. Schools can use the grants, which go up to $5000, to implement a breakfast program that uses an “alternative serving method” like grab-and-go breakfasts or breakfast in the classroom. Schools are also allowed to use the grant money to expand current breakfast programs to include alternative serving methods. Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera says that students who start the day with a good breakfast are able to stay focused and are in a better position to learn. He added that only 50% of students who qualify for reduced price or free lunches also get breakfast.
Only one school district in Indiana County will receive any grant money this time around, and that is Penns Manor School District, who will receive $3,171.43 for the breakfast program at the Junior-Senior High School.
