Yesterday’s state police advisory of a scam perpetrated on a 78-year-old Smicksburg woman falling victim to a phone scam is a timely reminder of today’s sixth annual “Scam Jam” at the Kovalchick Complex in Indiana.
The event co-sponsored by Aging Services Incorporated and the Indiana County District Attorney’s office is from 10 AM to 2 PM. It will feature information on how to protect yourself from fraud and scams, with a variety of speakers. As Aging Services’ Jim McQuown puts it, “People are going to learn about a lot of the different scams, how to recognize them, and what to do about them.”
McQuown says Scam Jam will be valuable for everyone who attends.
In the Smicksburg incident, the victim received a call from someone who claimed to be the attorney from her grandson, needing bail money. She sent the scammer $13,000.
There will also be information on other services, especially for senior citizens, such as those who take over parenting duties for their grandchildren, and Project Lifesaver, which helps people keep track of family members who might have dementia and be prone to wander away from home.
Today’s Scam Jam at the KCAC is free.
