IUP’s academic year is coming to a close this week, with commencement scheduled for Friday and Saturday, and that usually signals the start of a busy summer construction season on the campus.
This year, the university gets a jump start on the work schedule, with the replacement on the boiler exhaust stacks at the S.W. Jack Cogeneration Plant starting today. Access between the Co-Gen and boiler buildings will be closed starting today, along with six parking spots in the plant’s West lot, but for the most part the public won’t notice many changes for now.
The co-generation plant opened in 1986, generating steam and hot water heat plus electricity for the university’s use, with the option to sell electricity back to Penelec through what is now known as the PJM Interconnection, the regional power grid distributor.
IUP has not yet announced other projects slated for the summer construction season.
