It’s a big day for WCCS and oldies fans as “Bill Otto’s Oldies Attic” celebrates it’s 30th anniversary today.
The attic started this week in 1989, and although the technology has changed from records to tapes to cds and digital media, Otto has remained the constant presenece as DJ for the three-hour show. Otto said the show stemmed from his feeling that the oldies music should be played on Saturday mornings. At the time, he had a show called Prime Gold on Saturday nights, and it was on WQMU, before all the stations were owned by Renda Broadcasting. When offered, management did not want to move the show. WCCS offered Saturday mornings from 9 to Noon and the show has been in that spot each week since.
Otto added that over the 1560 Saturday morning shows, he’s played over 66,000 songs on the attic. One of the special attractions over the years are the interviews Otto’s conducted with the legends of rock and roll, including Frankie Vallie, Little Anthony of the Imperials, and the woman who was the inspiration behind Ritchie Valens’ hit “Donna”.
You can hear today’s 30th anniversary show at the Attic’s normal time from 9-noon today on WCCS.
