IUP’s annual Take Back the Night event is tonight. It’s a march through the campus and borough to show support for victims and survivors of violence led by the Haven Project, the Alice Paul House, and the IUP and Indiana communities.
The concept is based on the idea that many acts of violence occur in the cover of darkness, and as a result, women stay home at night out of fear. Marchers carry signs and chant anti-violence and empowerment messages.
Haven Project Sexual Violence Prevention Educator Jennifer McCroskey says Take Back the Night is for all who are concerned about sexual assault and violence. “We are encouraging anybody that’s interested to come out. It’s open to the IUP community, it’s open to Indiana County…anybody who’s interested in coming out and standing there and supporting victims and survivors of sexual assault.”
The march will end at the HUB, where a “Speak Out” will take place in the Ohio Room, featuring victims and survivors sharing their stories. The Take Back the Night march begins at 8 o’clock at the Putt-Delaney Courtyard.
